Welcome to GOLD Estonia 2017!

 I’m Lauren, and with my fellow Estonia team members we will be keeping you updated throughout the year as to our progress in our project for Guiding in Estonia with the Eesti GaIdide Liit. Our team is now firmly on track following our first briefing.

This weekend just passed, Amy B, Amy W, Lauren, Roxy, Sacha and Vicky all met formally for our first planning and training sessions at Tolmers’ Scout camp in Hertfordshire. Following on from the fun and adventures of our selection weekend in Wales, and along with the others selected for projects this year, we were able to settle down as a team and start to work towards our goals for the coming months. Somewhat fortunately, this was without the distraction of unexpected late night events and the trail of rain and mud that encompassed our selection process!

The six of us have been hand picked to work together based on our previous skills and life experience as well as our personalities and team skills working together.  Needless to say after 48 hours of each others company we have firmly established our team spirit, and are all eagerly anticipating the next 6 months working together before departing for Estonia. Throughout our weekend, and accompanied by constant snacks and numerous cups of tea, we have covered the basic grounding and the structure of what we will need to start planning for over the coming few months.  Our project this year is with the aim of building up Guiding in Estonia, a country that has such a small number of members presently and needs assistance in recruiting and maintaining members and volunteers as well as growing the confidence of members and their delivery of Guiding to others.

We will be headed to Estonia in the middle of September 2017 and have some set goals to work towards.   As well as consuming a LOT of biscuits, we were able to decide between ourselves our places and roles within the team and in true Girlguiding style, have designed a badge to compliment our mission which will be available to order in just a few weeks time.
 
In between all of the serious planning and presentations relevant to our trip, we also had time for a rainbow themed party. This added a light hearted note to the depth of the weekend and gave us the chance to unleash our creative side with some party games, all in aid of celebrating the 30th Birthday of the Rainbow section of Guiding.

The one with the Sunshine and Selfies #DAY 3-4

#DAY3 Wednesday 13th September. Day three started with more sunshine in Haapsalu. The apartment was 26 degrees and very warm to wake up to! Vicky, Roxy, and Amy B disappeared off early for a run before everyone got together to head down to the beachfront, looking out towards the many islands for which Estonia is renowned. Together we found a tiny patch of sand and quickly claimed it as our own for GOLD, sunshine, and selfies. We had the beach to ourselves as Haapsalu is a summer holiday town, and made the most of the empty streets and waterfront. After our breakfast stroll, it was down to serious business and planning for our school recruitment events over the coming days. 2017's Final GOLD Adventure

Last Friday, we all headed up to Sheffield for our debrief weekend; the final step of our GOLD journey. We were joined by the teams from Aruba, Rwanda, and Ghana, to evaluate and share our experiences from our projects. Saturday morning kicked off with a challenge to create a 15 minute presentation describing our project in Estonia to share with the other teams. Due to the amount of walking we had completed during our whole project (500,000 steps in total!) we decided to create a walking timeline of everything we had achieved. The one with the tourist times and GOLD Finland! #DAYS 7-9

#DAY 7 This morning was met with a lot of optimism, and plans crammed back to back for a day of Tallinn tourism. We were up and out and back to the Old Town bright and early to make the most of the time we had to walk around. First up was St. Olav's church; the tower here was told to us by locals as having once been the tallest building in Europe... this had been struck by lightening and patched up several times, but proved a challenging walk to the top for views around the hill of Toompea and out to sea. There was a definite mist and cloud hanging over the tower due to the time of morning, however the views around us were not marred. The experience was complete with the precarious pathway around the tower itself; two planks of wood strapped to the copper, and a thin mesh barrier!
