2017's Final GOLD Adventure



Last Friday, we all headed up to Sheffield for our debrief weekend; the final step of our GOLD journey. We were joined by the teams from Aruba, Rwanda, and Ghana, to evaluate and share our experiences from our projects.

Saturday morning kicked off with a challenge to create a 15 minute presentation describing our project in Estonia to share with the other teams. Due to the amount of walking we had completed during our whole project (500,000 steps in total!) we decided to create a walking timeline of everything we had achieved.

After lunch, we had various activities to complete, including team debrief sessions, and time to learn about other international opportunities available to us now that we had completed GOLD. We also had time to prepare for the evening entertainment.

For our entertainment, we decided to share a game that we had played whilst with the Estonian Guides. Everyone stand in a circle linking arms, with a cushion in the middle. You then have to pull across the circle as hard as to can to avoid stepping over the cushion, whilst keeping arms linked. Amy B once again saw off the competition to win the game successfully. For the second part of our entertainment we decided to share an article that had been written about us during our time in Estonia. This article had obviously been written in Estonian, and unfortunately Google translate does not necessarily cope well will Estonian-English translation, with some unusual but hilarious results. On Sunday we were able to learn more about other aspects of Guiding we can get involved in. We were also encouraged to use our training experience on GOLD to become trainers for Girlguiding, or to take on other roles within the organisation. So watch this space for potential future trainers and commissioners (or even future Chief Guides!)

The weekend ended on a high with a video showing our entire GOLD journey from start to finish, and we were all presented with badges to celebrate the year coming to an end. Sacha received a special GOLD Leader badge; well deserved for all her amazing organising this year that has kept us all going.

It was on a slightly sad note we all parted ways, but with the promise to meet up soon, and potentially continue our apparent enthusiasm for walking that even a 25km hike in Estonia could not diminish!

Next years participants will be starting their planning within the next few weeks so keep an eye out for their updates over the coming months, but for now from GOLD Estonia 2017, good bye/ hüvastu!

    Mine activity in the Pine Cove Pit finished in the middle of March, and the Company has commenced planning for push backs for the Pine Cove Pond and the North West Extension to the pit, which are expected to contribute ore in 2019. The Company is now converting the Pine Cove Pit into a fully-permitted in-pit tailings storage facility, which has approximately 15 years of capacity based on a throughput rate of 1,350 tonnes per day. Anaconda expects to begin tailings deposition in the third quarter of 2018.

#DAY3 Wednesday 13th September. Day three started with more sunshine in Haapsalu. The apartment was 26 degrees and very warm to wake up to! Vicky, Roxy, and Amy B disappeared off early for a run before everyone got together to head down to the beachfront, looking out towards the many islands for which Estonia is renowned. The one with the tourist times and GOLD Finland! #DAYS 7-9

#DAY 7 This morning was met with a lot of optimism, and plans crammed back to back for a day of Tallinn tourism. We were up and out and back to the Old Town bright and early to make the most of the time we had to walk around. First up was St. Olav's church; the tower here was told to us by locals as having once been the tallest building in Europe... this had been struck by lightening and patched up several times, but proved a challenging walk to the top for views around the hill of Toompea and out to sea. There was a definite mist and cloud hanging over the tower due to the time of morning, however the views around us were not marred. The experience was complete with the precarious pathway around the tower itself; two planks of wood strapped to the copper, and a thin mesh barrier!
